Singapore intends to assert its role in the automotive sector. And the State intends to play a card different from those put forward by its neighbours: the Thailand and the Malaysia. It still heavily depends on the volumes of the two national builders, Proton and Perodua, while the Thailand intends to complete its role as manufacturer of pick-up by the increase in the manufacture of cars.

Four areas of excellence

Singapore therefore intends to make anything automotive and particularly the equipment industry. The country believes that it can play a role through the assets available in four specific areas:

-Regional headquarters location: DaimlerChrysler, Nissan, BMW, Toyota, Volvo, Volkswagen installed regional antennas at Singapore. Nissan was the second constructor, after Toyota, to install an Office of 25 people. Nippon Renault ally supervises sales and networks of its zone of South-East Asia and Oceania. Among the equipment suppliers, Michelin, ZF, Bosch, Denso and Delphi have adopted the same strategy and direct their activities ASEAN since Singapore.

-Production: apart from a bus assembler, no manufacturer produced in the country, but the auto industry there employs 5,000 people and generates a volume of activity, production only, $ 1.3 billion. Major equipment manufacturers, such as Delphi, Sanden or Takata produce components in the country, particularly renowned for its manufacturing of electronic components and systems and expertise in the field of precision mechanics. These areas represent a total volume of sales of EUR 90 billion. In the field of electronics, the strengths of the country in the field of semiconductor manufacturing have undoubtedly played an important role for the installation of Delphi in the region. The OEM has a plant of 1,300 persons that manufacture engines calculators and side impact airbags for sensors. And Singapore intends to strengthen its economic attractiveness with the signing of numerous customs agreements facilitating exports. In addition to his membership in ASEAN, the country has signed free trade agreements with the Japan, the United States, the Australia, the New Zealand and the Korea.

-Logistics: Fort of an enviable location in the heart of Singapore, Southeast Asia has become an important platform for storage and distribution of vehicles. Toyota, for example, in opened (logistics) in 2002. It ensures the distribution of documents in any of the Asia-Pacific, but also to Africa and Latin America. In 2005, DaimlerChrysler inaugurated is his most important regional distribution centre for parts on 40,000 m3. This logistics centre feeds 26 countries in the region, including the Japan and China.

Program A CAR

-Research & Development: To attract the OEMs, Singapore put on the quality of its means of R & D. The authorities of the country moving it towards a society of knowledge and innovation. In this context, the efforts made in research & Development have been important over the last fifteen years and now represent 2.25 of the national product crude the country. Obvious corollary of this strategy, the training of technicians and engineers also among the strong points that Singapore wants to put forward.
